St. Nicholas Church - New York, NY
Architect: Santiago Calatrava
The Saint Nicholas Greek National Shrine on Liberty Street replaces the previous building at the World Trade Center site in New York. Developed by the Port Authority of New York and New Jersey and designed by architect Santiago Calatrava, the glowing, domed building form is influenced by The Hagia Sophia and Church of the Holy Savior in Istanbul. AVRO collaborated with the owner, architect and builder to develop a proprietary stone-glass laminated panel to feature a translucent, naturally veined appearance. AVRO designed a unitized marble cladding system for opaque facade areas including hemispherical stair tower roofs. AVRO designed 40-custom curved skylights to allow the passage of light into the shrine by day through the glass-stone facade. AVRO provided nonlinear blast engineering, component performance testing specifications, review of submittal and fabrication documentation, site conditions review and Engineer of Record services for enclosure systems.
